However Ross Taylor and in-form Brendon McCullum then combined in a productive 85-run sixth wicket stand but with only 11 balls remaining in the first day, left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom struck to remove McCullum and leave New Zealand on 282 for six.

It all means most firms can barely split the two sides - Bet365's odds being typical at 2/1 England and 21/10 New Zealand.

But the price on the draw has come in to no better than 11/8 and that's no surprise because the pitch looks full of runs.

With that in mind, England coach Peter Moores was happy enough with the way the day's play panned out.

He said: "We knew if we could get three in the last session and have them six down at the end of play we'd have been satisfied.

"We needed that last wicket because the way McCullum was playing, he looked like he was just going more or less into full one-day mode, which would have been very dangerous.

"It was important to get him out and to have the new ball in the morning gives us one end to bowl at and a chance to get some early wickets."
