Bolton v Liverpool

Liverpool have some tough away assignments between now and the end of the season and, on past records, this deserves to be classed as one of them. In their last seven visits to Bolton, the Reds have emerged victorious just once and that took an 88th winner from Emile Heskey. The other six have produced three wins for Bolton and three draws so the home side have consistently proved a big thorn in the side of their Lancastrian rivals. Ex-Evertonian Gary Megson will be extra keen to keep that record going and Bolton are 7/2 to take all three points again. Liverpool have lost just twice away from home in the Premier League this season (only Arsenal have lost less) so Rafa Benitez's men are hard to beat but both those defeats have come in their last six PL road trips and they've won just one of those half-dozen games. More in-form and confident Liverpool teams have suffered in this fixture so it's easy to predict another difficult day for the Merseysiders. Liverpool will probably have the bulk of the play but can they take their chances? So often this season they haven't. Bolton are even money with a goal start on the handicaps and that certainly looks worth considering.

Verdict: Bolton 1 Liverpool 1

Everton v Portsmouth

Everton won this fixture 3-0 last year and have taken maximum points in three of the last four meetings at Goodison. But never have Portsmouth arrived on Merseyside boasting such an impressive away record. Harry Redknapp's men have won eight times on their travels this season - a figure matched only by Chelsea. Back-to-back defeats at Sunderland and Manchester United suggested they might be losing their touch but they've bounced back with 1-0 wins at Bolton in the Premier League and Preston in the FA Cup. Add in a 1-0 home win over Sunderland and Pompey seem to have turned into George Graham's Arsenal. However, there's no doubt that this will be a big, big test as Everton are one of the form teams in the country. The pursuit of a Champions League spot has turned from distant dream to realistic goal and the Toffees have won four straight after an impressive 2-0 win at Manchester City on Monday night. Their success is based on teamwork but there's no doubting how crucial Yakubu is to the cause. The Nigerian striker has plundered five goals in his last four Everton games and has two home hat-tricks to his name this season. Portsmouth, of course, were his previous club so that will add an extra edge and, in his current form, he has to be worth a bet at 9/4 with William Hill to find the net again.

Verdict: Everton 2 Portsmouth 1
